Expectations shape everyone’s life course, ideals, and beliefs. My work examines how and when these expectations are formed. This includes the moments of guarded triumph when these expectations are believed in to the fullest extent, such as during the teenage years. This bored, instable optimism lends itself to possibly the most interesting and most hostile, yet softly vulnerable period of time.
Expectation can be derived from anything, including pervasive and invasive media. Source imagery was chosen from various blogs, networks such as Facebook, and the vast array of paparazzi photographs of different celebrities. These celebrities gain a sort of sainthood status through their placement on pedestals, and our anticipation of their continued life performance. This includes our expectation and glee in downfall, sacrifice for entertainment, and destruction of identity – as it is the idea of the person being worshipped and not the celebrity themselves.
Through the use of dripping and decay, the moments of expectation are lost and void, leaving only a disjuncture between beliefs and reality. This is continued in other work, which considers expectations and frustration with regards to self as well as to others. My work examines expectations and how we feel whether what we expect from life comes to fruition or not.
